Elwing's Flight

Thoughts from a girl as she flies over the sea.

A good thing about 18:

I am now allowed to buy duct tape from Wal-Mart! YES!!

At least that's what Caleb told me.

An ode to duct tape, the heart and soul (well... er... sort of...) of an Irish dancer:

O wondrous duct tape!
What a beautiful thing.
Black and shiny
Goes with green.
Its dark, smooth surface
Has a stunning sheen.
Especially when stuck on
Niall or Colin
(those are my hardshoes
if you were wonderin'!)

O faithful duct tape!
You never fail
To keep my feet
From flailing in the air
And doing somersaults
On a cement stage
Is not very great...
So thank you, duct tape.

*Takes a bow* Thank you, thank you, everyone. That was a work of art... probably the best poem I ever wrote... or not....

I wonder if anyone besides Sara reads this anymore. I just did an ASTOUNDING job of keeping my readers, didn't I, by not writing for a month! EVERYONE COME BAAAAACK!!!! Hmmm... if you come back I might have some chocolate... or not... but you'll never know until I see your comments! ;D

By the way, see those links on the side, over to the right? That say Sara's blog, Lora's blog, and Caleb's blog? Click on them. They're cool.

Awesome poem Rachel! You should do that more often, lol. ;-D

Hey Sara's not the only one who reads your blog; I just have not been in the commenting mood for a while. So um, when do I get my chocolate?

I'm sorry you couldn't come tonight; we had a lot of fun. We'll have to do something like that again when you don't have something to do.

w00t! A link to my blog, and a bit of a promotional thing too. You definitely get some coolness points for that. :-)

Well Rache you're definitely not getting any older if you can come up with stuff like that! Oh yes, according to Tyler you can also get lighters and set things on fire! How can that not be exciting???

Oh, I am just DYING with excitement! You know how big of a pyro I am... lol. Right.

Yay, I do have some readers after all! You all rock. Now, I said I might have some chocolate if you all post... so where is it? Right now would be a good time... actually anytime would be good, I'm always in the mood for chocolate. ;D

^^ Yeah, Kevin, my point exactly. Where is it? I'm still waiting... hmm... maybe I shouldn't have said "might."

You don't get to buy duct tape until you're 18???

Yeah, in case you're wondering why I don't comment, it's because I have nothing intelligent to say (see above), but I have read your blog for a little while.

  • At 5/02/2005 1:42 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

Well, Caleb told me it was true. And I believe him... though it's really strange....

By the way, do I know you?

  • At 5/02/2005 4:27 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I think I remember hearing something about that. How people aren't allowed to buy duct tape until they're 18. Kinda wierd..

I'm glad you asked that. Yes, you know me. Um, a hint ... I was in last year's dance recital.

("Kitty Pryde" is just an alias I chose because I like X-Men [Kitty Pryde is Shadowcat's real name].)

  • At 5/02/2005 5:04 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

^^ Lol, that narrows it down to maybe a hundred people! Hmm... so are you going to be in this year's recital, too?

  • At 5/02/2005 9:12 PM, Blogger £l §tévó said…

As long as random people are commenting on this blog, we should see how many comments you can fit on one post... Yeah, I'm bored. Homework has no entertainment value.

  • At 5/02/2005 9:43 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

Great idea, Stevo. Let's see how much random stuff we can write in comments.

Whoah, I just noticed something strange. I have more guy posters than girl posters! Weird... well, I DO have a lot of guy friends... but still, where are all the girls?

Oh, and Kitty Pryde, I think I have a pretty good idea who you are... actually, I'll be surprised if you aren't one of the two people I'm thinking of. Are you in the troupe? Don't worry, I won't say your real name if you don't want me to!

  • At 5/02/2005 10:20 PM, Blogger Herohtar said…

Lol, I agree with that. Homework == boring (at least research paper homework...)

Rachel: Maybe guys just spend more time reading/commenting on blogs than girls do?

  • At 5/02/2005 11:03 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Yes, I will be in the recital this year. No, I am not in the troupe.(Surprised?)
I like this game. Any more questions??

I've never been a "random people" before. It's amusing. ;oD

I mostly agree with Herohtar about research paper homework unless it's super interesting and really easy to get the needed information.

  • At 5/02/2005 11:13 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

^ Wow. Okay, I'm stumped.... Have I ever been in the same dance as you (this year included)?

You aren't in Sr. Irish, then, are you? If you are, then you could only be one person. If not, that doesn't get me anywhere. :-D

  • At 5/02/2005 11:15 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

Wow, this is funny, I have no idea who you are... I'll probably be racking my brain about this all night!

  • At 5/03/2005 12:51 AM, Blogger Herohtar said…

Way to go Kitty Pryde! Hey, we should all play Stump Rachel! ;-D

Yeah, doing research papers can be interesting too. Actually, I don't mind the research... just the paper part. (Evil writing!)

  • At 5/03/2005 9:39 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I had never known that about duct tape! Anyway, what are you all doing posting around midnight??

  • At 5/03/2005 2:51 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Rachel: I am not in Sr. Irish, but I have been in at least one dance with you before.

    Herohtar: Thank you!!
Really? I kinda like the writing, given my previous parameters and usually after I've already started and have momentum.

Estel of Rohan: Posting around midnight is fun!

Does anybody have a spare Hershey's bar? I would really like one.

  • At 5/03/2005 3:10 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

Herohtar/Caleb: I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Kitty Pryde! It's the writing that I like. I'm not so crazy about the research part, unless it's a topic I'm REALLY interested in.

Do I know you, Estel of Rohan?

Posting around midnight is something I need to do less of! ;-)

Kitty Pryde... um... what to say? Oh, I've got it. What kind/s of dance do you take? I still have no clue who you are for sure, though I'm getting some ideas.

Sorry, Caleb. I know who you are, so you can't play Stump Rachel. I guess you'll just have to live with it. ;-D

Hersheys bars... yum... the chocolate is calling me....

  • At 5/03/2005 3:58 PM, Blogger Herohtar said…

Ouch, everyone is against me; they all like writing!! *cries*

Estel of Rohan: Because that is the best time to post!! :-D What are you doing posting around 9:40 AM? Eww...

Rachel: True, but if instead of posting under "Herohtar" I used "Anonymous" or just made up some random name then you would not know it was me. So there! :-P

  • At 5/03/2005 4:26 PM, Blogger £l §tévó said…

Wow. This is getting complicated... Anyways yay for chocolate and homework bites (especially doing a five-page paper over Mexican government). Also, Rachel's blog has a ton of guys reading for the obvious reason that she's Rachel, hehe. And by the way who the heck are you random people that I don't know?

  • At 5/03/2005 4:52 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

^ Quote: "Also, Rachel's blog has a ton of guys reading for the obvious reason that she's Rachel, hehe."

^ Uh, Stephen, you're scaring me... what was THAT supposed to mean? :-O

And who these "random people" are... that's what I'm trying to find out! About Estel of Rohan... I saw Rohan and I immediately thought "Jackie," but I doubt she'd be "Estel," and since Estel is Aragorn's nickname, it will probably be a guy.... *cough* Caleb *cough*

Watch out, Stevo, you never know if you might actually know one of these "random people" yourself. ;-) Although I doubt they're as random as me. I like Cheez-its. I LOVE chocolate. They don't go together well, though, do they? I'm going to MEXICO!!!!

You do know me, but I'm not Jackie. Nor am I a guy. I know Estel is Aragorn's alias, but that is entirely unrelated to why I use the name. :)

Hey Kitty Pryde, who is your favorite LOTR character?

  • At 5/03/2005 5:07 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

as long as we're on LOTR, Estel of Rohan, I like Eeowyn and Sam. Who do you like?

  • At 5/03/2005 5:10 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Gandalf is my top favorite, but I also like Frodo, Aragorn, Sam, Theoden, Eowyn, Merry, and Pippin. I definitely do not like Boromir, but I do pity him.

  • At 5/03/2005 5:13 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Oh, I like all them, too. And don't forget Arwen. At least, I would add her to that list.
    (apologies for misspelling Eowyn)

BTW, how do you get those pictures to go with your comment? I want one!

  • At 5/03/2005 5:16 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

You can call me Kitty if you want, but I do like Kitty Pryde. :^)

Kitty Pryde: I meant just plain "Estel," not "just plain Estel." I have never watched X-Men, so I can't say whether I like them.

Okay, wait... I take back what I said earlier, THIS is the longest comment thread I have ever seen. Just want to make that clear.

Kitty: that was a HARD test. There were a few native speakers with us when I took it and it looked like they were having a hard time too. Hey but I managed to skip 3/4 of the school day so it was definitely worth it. I don't think i did well though.
Kelly: there was rumored chocolate but Rache hasn't produced the goods yet.

BTW who the heck are Joshua, David, and Kelly??? I can't keep track of all these people!!!

£l §tévó: Wow. Not sure what to say. I'm glad it was worth it, but sorry you don't think you did well.

I know Kelly. We go to the same church. She's cool. I don't know David or Joshua. *shrug*

Kelly: I believe she said it will be on her table at our graduation. You are coming to it aren't you?

Kitty: You know me and Kelly but not David or Joshua? That's kind of funny, but I guess it makes sense. Although, I have a feeling you are going to find out soon.

You know, this whole "how many comments can we get?" thing is getting kind of hard... the recent comments are miles below the post box.

  • At 5/04/2005 9:02 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Herohtar, what makes sense? find out what soon?
    ???

(I don't think I know Joshua unless he's your brother)

Hey y'all, just wondering, but can you see the beautiful picture on the sidebars of the main page for Elwing's flight? For some reason we can't see it on any of our other computers besides this one... it's a picture of the Valinor next to the sea at sunset.

  • At 5/04/2005 10:59 PM, Blogger Herohtar said…

Kitty: I don't know... maybe it does not make sense; writing papers does strange things to one's mind. Wow, you got it right on the first guess; Joshua is my brother.

Rachel: You mean there should be pictures on both sides of your blog? I cannot see them... it is just blank white space.

  • At 5/04/2005 11:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Rachel: I can see them if I let the page fully download ;^)

Herohtar: yea! I have figured out who David is too. I still don't know Stevo.(and he said he doesn't know me)

Weird... but then again, I don't know hotmail, so it was a major accomplishment for me to add those to the template! Hopefully at least half the people reading this can see it. It doesn't look all that great without it.

Dotty/Kitty, El Stevo is mi amigo (I hope that's right?) Stephen, from church. I doubt you know him outside of the computer world.

  • At 5/04/2005 11:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Rachel, question. are you bouncing from blogpage to blogpage?

  • At 5/04/2005 11:21 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

By the way, everyone, the paintings lining the border and also the parts of the painting of the sea that's behind the title are by Ted Nasmith, my absolute favorite Tolkien artist. My profile picture's by him, too. See his amazing pictures here: http://www.tednasmith.com/

They give me the chills. Some of them are so close to what I've imagined. And I'll bet you anything that some of what you see in the movies is based off of his artwork, even though they've never mentioned it! Like Isengard, for instance. But his Silmarillion paintings are some of my favorites. Wow. Check them out!

  • At 5/04/2005 11:22 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

    Kitty: huh?

  • At 5/04/2005 11:26 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    Rachel: explanation (I hope)

I posted very shortly after you and Caleb. you didn't post again so I went to another blog and there were recent posts (you and Caleb) and I come back here and there's a few more. so I wondered if you were bouncing between blogs.

  • At 5/04/2005 11:30 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

Yup, I did that! But now I'm just looking at the pretty pictures on Ted Nasmith's site. You know, I take it back. His LotR paintings are just as awesome as the Silmarillion ones, if not more so.

  • At 5/04/2005 11:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    you did bounce between blogs?

    Rachel, you funny/

  • At 5/04/2005 11:40 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

One more thing about Ted Nasmith's paintings: it isn't so much that they look like I imagined it (they often don't in LotR), they just give the right feeling. The people don't look anything like I imagined, but their expressions are priceless. There's so much going on.

Okay, enough about that! I'm done talking about paintings now, lol.

  • At 5/04/2005 11:44 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I saw a boat on your tile of the picture. that's really cool/

    I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.
Rache: yeah for some reason and i can't see the cool artwork on ur blog.
Maybe my firefox browser thinks ur pictures are tryin to hi-jack my computer or somethin.

Anyways, I got a random email from college board and apparently I have the SAT on Staurday, just what I need! More tests!

And Rachel... we still need chocolate!

  • At 5/05/2005 8:23 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

Grr... the SAT... ain't that just wonderful. At least it's not the ACT. I liked the SAT a WHOLE lot better than the ACT, but then that was before they changed the SAT this year. I don't know what the new SAT's like.

And yes. We... must... have... chocolate!!!!!

  • At 5/06/2005 12:45 AM, Blogger Herohtar said…

£l §tévó: You use Firefox? That is awesome! You are officially a cool person! ;-D

Rachel: The new SAT is evil; you have to write stuff in a few places instead of just answering multiple choice questions. I am glad I took it before they changed it.

I agree, we need some chocolate...

  • At 5/06/2005 8:21 AM, Blogger £l §tévó said…

You mean I wasn't before? just kidding. Yeah, I really don't need the SAT so I talked to my parents and I decided I'm just gonna blow it off. Cause I really don't feel like taking any more 4-hour-early-morning-standardized tests. I still have my AP U.S. Government and AP Comparative government tests to go, yippee.
And Rachel, you start makin that chocolate, you have a lot of orders to fill.

  • At 5/06/2005 10:53 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

Excuse me, but WHO did you say had a lot of orders to fill?? Who says it was me who was going to give out the chocolate to anyone besides Dotty and Bethany, anyway? I thought I was going to get chocolate from you all. Sigh... you guys are impossible....

  • At 5/06/2005 11:59 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I beg to differ, I would argue that we are improbable, not impossible :)

Rachel: I say it is you who will be giving out the chocolate, so there! :-P

  • At 5/08/2005 4:19 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

Hmm... so who are you? Or will you be mean and make me play a guessing game with you, too? ;-D

And Sara, lol!! I was wondering what you'd say when you saw this.

  • At 5/08/2005 9:54 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Nah. I won't play a game. I'll be true to my name. (Which is, of course, Dull) I'm Brad. Remember me? I met you at Mazzio's when I had Mono, but didn't know it. I was really embarassed that I fell asleep while talking to you, and consequently it has been bothering me ever since. I hope you didn't think I was too much of a looser, because I really do think highly of you.

  • At 5/08/2005 11:17 PM, Blogger Rachel said…

Hi, Brad! Actually... I'm a little embarrassed... I don't really remember you. I think I might remember meeting you, though.... Sorry, I guess it was just a really busy day and I've slept since then, lol. You fell asleep while talking to me?? Wow, I don't remember that at all! Don't worry yourself over it. You couldn't help it, anyway! And no, I don't think you're a loser for that!

  • At 5/09/2005 1:04 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Lol. You made it sounds like you don't know who I am! I'm Anna's brother. I sit by Sara every day during youth wav. You always say hi to me in the hall. You posted on my blog when I had one. And you don't remember me? Ok, that's odd. I think I'm getting something mixed up. I'm confused most of the time about almost everything.

  • At 5/09/2005 9:42 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Salve, Brad! I think I know who you are!

  • At 5/09/2005 11:36 AM, Blogger Rachel said…

OH!!!! You're THAT Brad!!! Of course I know you!! I'm so sorry, I thought it sounded like you had only just met me at Mazzio's, and I was wracking my brain trying to think who I met at Mazzio's for the first time! So just ignore all that I said earlier about not knowing you. I still don't think you're a loser, either. I'm sorry you're sick, that stinks.

  • At 5/10/2005 12:58 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Lol. I'm not sick now. I mean when you first moved here. This was before I disappeared for 2 years. My dad knew your dad before you came because my dad gets all the memos about new collegues. So when you first got here, my family took your to lunch at Mazzio's. I was very sick. I shouldn't have been outside the walls of a hospitol, let alone going to Mazzio's and trashing myself with too much caffine. So I just shut down. But I'm much better, and have been for three years. It was a while ago. Thank you for your concern, though.
